In 2023, the Franchise Tax Board issued over $9 billion to California residents and their dependents in a new tax relief program called the Middle Class Tax Refund. Who Qualified for California’s Middle Class Tax Refund?

You may have qualified for the California Middle Class Tax Refund if you were a resident of California for over six months during the 2020 tax year and filed your 2020 California tax return by October 15, 2021. Some additional criteria were that:

  • You were a California resident when the Franchise Tax Board issued your MCTR payment.
  • You didn’t qualify as an independent during the 2020 tax year.
  • You met the California adjusted gross (CA AGI) income limits for your tax filing status.
